Statement from City Councilors on Trump Administration Directive Against Newton

Newton City Council

June 4, 2025

The City Council of Newton, Massachusetts is aware of the Executive Order from President
Donald J. Trump and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Sanctuary Jurisdictions list that claim that our municipality is in "a lawless insurrection against the supremacy of Federal law and the
Federal Government's obligation to defend the territorial sovereignty of the United States."

As City Councilors, we note for the record that this is false. The City of Newton, specifically in its capacity as a law enforcement agency, is prohibited from taking any action that denies any individuals due process of law, under the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, regardless of immigration or citizenship status. Our commitment to uphold this civil right is reflected in our municipal ordinances. We will not be intimidated or coerced into abandoning that.
